Specialist Bio

Rey Ximenes is a consulting physician for Advanced Pain Care, a consulting physician for Medical Equations Inc., and the Medical Director of Driftwood Recovery. He specializes in addiction medicine, interventional pain procedures, medication management, hormonal management (BIHR), medical acupuncture, nutrition/herbs, and lifestyle management.

He is the former owner/director of The Pain and Stress Management Center in Austin, TX (1993-2015). P&SMC was a multi-disciplinary pain management center dedicated to the integration of modalities used to alleviate pain and addiction. This use of these modalities in dealing with pain and addiction naturally led to the use in an overall wellness blueprint used with all the patients.

Dr. Ximenes is board certified in interventional pain management, acupuncture, and naturopathy. He began his career in medicine as an anesthesiologist working in such places as M.D. Anderson Hospital, Texas Heart Institute, St. Luke’s Hospital, Hermann Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and The Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. He was also a founding member of South Austin Anesthesiology in Austin, Texas.

His training included general anesthesia, cardio-vascular anesthesia, neuroanesthesia, obstetrical anesthesia, and pain management. He has trained in acupuncture, naturopathy, nutrition, and western herbology. This gave him a broad perspective to draw upon in the practice of pain management and addiction.

Shortly after moving to Austin it became evident that pain was being woefully undertreated in this city and he set about building P&SMC to attempt to handle the needs of the people. There were others involved in pain management in the city but their approach was primarily an invasive, interventional Western approach. Dr. Ximenes realized this approach, although effective in many ways, and certainly often a necessary component, was an incomplete plan. It was at this point that he began to utilize some of the techniques he had learned in his lifelong search for additional pieces of the puzzle. This search included many areas of so-called “alternative medicine” which he now prefers to term integrative medicine with the implication that we can receive all possible modalities in a synergistic way rather than having to choose between paradigms. It is this mindset that he now also brings to addiction medicine, using all aspects of integrative medicine to treat this difficult problem.

Dr. Ximenes is Board Certified in Interventional Pain Management, Acupuncture, Naturopathy, Medical Acupuncture, and Addiction Medicine. He is the former President of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture and The Austin Pain Society, and a former Board Member of the Texas State Board of Acupuncture. Dr. Ximenes is well versed in and now offers his patients not only the full complement of medication management and interventional techniques, but also acupuncture, Prolotherapy, osteopathic manipulations, myofascial release, Qi Gong healing, nutritional counseling, herbal therapy, psychological counseling, exercise therapy/counseling (including Tai Chi, Qi Gong, aerobics, and strength training), meditation, and many others as well.

He maintains an informal network of friends, teachers, practitioners and healers to provide a truly multi-disciplinarian approach to pain management and addiction medicine.
